Making transitions -- from high school to college, from one college to another, from lower-level to higher-level courses -- is a major challenge for many students. While we certainly intend to stretch your scholastic limits while you are at AAMU, we'll also do our best to help you succeed. University College is the portal of entry for all first-time students at AAMU. It offers advice, testing, tutoring, and more. Even before you start burning the midnight oil, you will encounter University College -- most likely through Operation Jump-Start. Mandatory for students who have or transfer fewer than 30 semester credit hours, Jump-Start involves a week of preliminary placement testing and get-acquainted activities -- campus tours, parent workshops, and lots of information for you, covering everything from how to manage your time to how to be a good Bulldog...Welcome to the family! Through University College, you will also meet your academic advisors, whose responsibilities include helping new students like you navigate the choppy waters of college during the early going. Your advisor, for example will track your progress fulfilling core-curriculum requirements, as you advance from University College work to more courses in your major. Each University College advisor works with departmental co-advisors in the five academic schools. This coordinated effort will improve your chances of sailing smoothly toward a degree. Other University College services include the provision of a vast informational resource laboratory, which supports a Computer Assistance Instructional Program. University College also provides a Developmental Education Program, which assists students who need additional preparation for college-level academics. Moreover, University College operates the Technical Studies Program, a non-traditional bachelor's degree program for AAMU's growing population for work-experienced adult learners, who often find financial constraints and other responsibilities barriers to traditional collegiate study.
