ALSAMP Scholars Program

 

What are ALSAMP Scholars?

 

ALSAMP Scholars are a select group of individuals that are known for their excellence in academic coursework, maintaining a 3.0 or higher GPA, and the pursuit of a career in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics.

 

What is an ALSAMP Scholarship? 

  1. The ALSAMP Scholarship pays tuition and fees. 
  2. The funds will be automatically transferred to a students account in the Fall and    Spring Semesters of each year.  Failure of the student to register for classes on time may result in late fees on an account.  The Scholarship is not responsible for fees incurred as a result of late registration. 

Program Requirements and Guidelines

 

  1. Scholars have weekly participation in ALSAMP Resource Center activities related to their academic major, including research, studying, tutoring, mentoring, and preparing for the GRE. 
  2. Scholars serve as facilitators and provide assistance with all ALSAMP/AAGEP campus workshops and conferences. 
  3. Scholars must maintain the status of a full-time student in good standing. 
  4. Scholars must maintain a grade point average of 3.0. 
  5. Scholars must major in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics. 
  6. Scholars must serve a minimum of five (5) scheduled hours in the Drop-In Center each week during the academic year. 

Scholars have the opportunity to be selected to participate in research experience in their junior or senior year.

ALSAMP Drop-In Center

An ALSAMP Drop-In Center is located on each campus equipped with computer technology where ALSAMP Scholars go to receive tutoring and skills reinforcement in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
 

Each ALSAMP Scholar is required to spend a minimum of five hours per week studying, assisting students to improve their competence in STEM and participating in ALSAMP Resource Center activities related to their academic major, including research, studying, tutoring, mentoring and preparing for the GRE. Scholars meet in these centers to participate in group study sessions. The Drop-In Centers are staffed by graduate fellows, ALSAMP Scholars, faculty and may employ a part-time or full-time director.

 

Alabama LSAMP Semester Research Program 

  1. The program is designed for students planning to attend graduate school.
  2. A faculty member agreeing to serve as a research mentor must be an active researcher who has published a research paper or given a research presentation at a professional meeting within the last five years.
  3.  The faculty member must submit a proposal detailing the planned research activities.
  4.  The student, in conjunction with an advisor, must provide a schedule listing courses and research or laboratory activities.
  5.  The research activities shall not interfere with the student’s progress toward a degree.
  6.  The student will provide a summary of research accomplishments and a research project at the end of the research semester.
  7.  The faculty mentor will provide a report on the student’s accomplishments at the end of the semester.
  8.  The faculty member will receive a stipend of $600.00 for serving as a mentor during a semester.
  9.  The student will receive a stipend of 500.00 during the semester.
  10.  The campus PI will provide a list of students and faculty planning to participate in the program to the project director before August 1 for budget purposes.

Student Qualifications for Supported Undergraduate Research

Participation

           

Students requesting participation in LSAMP undergraduate

research activities must satisfy the following at the time of

proposed participation.

 

  1. Completed at least 32 semester hours of course work with a GPA of at least 3.0 (Previous research experience considered).
  2. Completed at least 8 hours of course work in the area of proposed research with a GPA of at least 3.0.
  3. The 8 hours of course work in the area of proposed research shall not include remedial courses.
  4. The proposed research must be in the student’s major or minor area of concentration.

ALSAMP Meetings and Conferences

 

ALSAMP Scholars and Bridge to the Doctorate Fellows Conference

 

Each spring, students and faculty from Alabama Alliance institutions participate in a conference and scientific competition. The conference and competition are designed to: provide an opportunity for alliance ALSAMP Scholars and BD Fellows to meet and share successes and solutions to problems faced by minority students in the pursuit of careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), Motivate ALSAMP Scholars to pursue Ph.D. degrees in STEM, provide a forum to showcase student research and provide an opportunity for ALSAMP faculty to exchange ideas and plan curriculum reform.

 

Spring Executive Committee Meeting

 

The Spring Executive Committee Meeting is held in conjunction with the ALSAMP Scholars and Bridge to the Doctorate Conference. The one day meeting consists of campus reports from each institution, financial and other business related to the project.

 

Summer Bridge Program Conference

 

The Summer Bridge Program is a seven week effort designed to facilitate the transition of Alabama minority students from high school to ALSAMP institutions where they have been accepted for the fall term. Students must be majoring in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM). The Summer Bridge Conference includes a guest speaker and features student poster competitions in the areas of mathematics, English, and essay writing and an award ceremony climaxing the Summer Bridge experience for the students and their leaders.

 

ALSAMP Research Internship Program Conference

 

The ALSAMP  Internship Program is designed to provide research experiences for undergraduates form alliance institutions in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). Interns participate in hands-on research activities for nine weeks with graduate faculty mentors. The EPSCoR/ALSAMP interns present their research findings in the annual LSAMP Research Conference held each summer at The University of Alabama at Birmingham.

 

Governing Board Meeting

 

The cooperative agreement with NSF requires that a governing board composed of each partner institution's president/provost business leaders and community leaders, with the awardees' president/provost serving as chair. The purpose of the governing board is to provide input on oversight of project operations and to meet with and report to the principal investigator annually.

 

Fall Executive Committee Meeting

 

The Fall Executive Committee Meeting is held on one of the ALSAMP institutions' campus. The two day meeting consists of Bridge to the Doctorate (BD) Reports, introduction of new cohort of BD Fellows, campus reports from each institution, financial and other business related to the project.

 

Graduate School Fair

 

Hosted by The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) each year, the Annual AAGEP/ALSAMP Graduate School Fair is a one day recruiting event open to ALSAMP undergraduate scholars form universities and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU'S) in Alabama majoring in science, engineering, and mathematics. Held each fall on the UAB campus, the Fair attracts more than 250 ALSAMP undergraduates with an interest in pursuing a graduate degree.
