Alabama A&M University Office of Information Technology Services

IT MISSION, GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The mission of Information Technology Services is to provide and promote information-technology services that support the mission of the University and provide leadership for the changing information-technology environment as well as to create an IT-intensive environment that facilitates teaching, learning, research and administration. We provide technology leadership; build the campus information infrastructure and provide technical support to create the information technology environment that the University needs to reach its goals.

To accomplish our mission, we will focus our efforts:

To provide adequate computing, information access, and network resources to satisfy the needs of students, faculty, and staff for teaching, learning, research and administration locally and remotely,

To support, maintain the academic and administrative computing activities of the University and to enable quality, efficiency and productivity through development, training, expansion of technical support and realignment/reengineering of information technology processes and systems; and

To facilitate and enhance processes to provide quality information services and reliable information access to our clients in a reliable and secured way.

GOALS

GOAL 1: To provide adequate computing, information access, and network resources to satisfy the needs of students, faculty, and staff for teaching, learning, research and administration locally and remotely.

OBJECTIVES:

Provide faculty & staff member with a networked computer and accessibility to networked devices and appliances.

Provide common office productivity tools, virus detection / protection software and other productivity tools for students, faculty and staff.

Provide wireless networking services in work areas, classrooms, conference rooms and common areas where flexibility and mobility for data access are required and when this is the most cost effective alternative. Also, provide data connectivity to all residence halls and improve remote access to campus network and computing resources.

Extend, replace and upgrade network cable media, devices and software systematically to build a solid foundation of campus IT infrastructure and to provide seamless exploration of virtual environments in order to improve availability, management and control of campus backbone network.

Increase the number and improve the support of technology-equipped classrooms, student computer labs and create mobile e-classrooms, information kiosks, a cyber-café and remotely-monitored 24X7 Window-based terminal (WBT) computer labs.

GOAL 2: To support, maintain the academic and administrative computing activities of the University and to enable quality, efficiency and productivity through development, training, expansion of technical support and realignment/reengineering of information technology processes and systems.

OBJECTIVES:

Compile and review previous IT-related documents & reports and conduct a technical assessment of existing IT resources and capabilities to minimize the Total Costs of Ownership (TOC).

To Promote Distributed Education/Learning and Deploy Classroom Technology into Classrooms.

Manage computing assets by establishing hardware / software standards, inventory requirements in order to improve purchasing decision, support, connectivity, and interoperability and also to minimize down time of computing resources.

Maintain and upgrade computing devices in open computer labs to extend its useful life and review & analyze student survey results to satisfy students computing requirements.

Protect, monitor, maintain and manage mission critical servers and services. Also, deploy new servers, network appliances and network services as needed.

Coordinate, consult and cooperate with other functional units in planning stage to leverage existing IT capabilities and resources and continue to provide assistance to online technical service requests.

Encourage faculty in the field of Distance-Learning/Distributed Education (Asynchronous /synchronous) and provide workshops to train them to create Web-enabled course(s).

Provide workshops / seminars via professional development series for faculty, staff and students to make use of computing resources effectively and creatively.

Engage in development of web-based and desktop application to facilitate the use of information and dissemination of learning, teaching and administration materials.

Increase the number of IT staff based on number of computing devices, the level of complexity of services and scope of works to be insure to provide adequate, prompt and reliable services.

GOAL 3: To facilitate and enhance processes to provide quality information services and reliable information access to our clients in a reliable and secured way.

OBJECTIVES:

To Improve Delivery/Access to Application Programs, Students Information Systems and Institutional Data.

Develop, adopt and evaluate computer use policies, operations procedures, guidelines and recommendations regularly to provide clear understanding about use of IT resources on campus, to minimize maintenance costs, to improve services and to protect information technology resources and institutional data.

Employ data security mechanism to discourage and prevent access from intruders as well as from unauthorized users and continue to deploy campus-wide centralized SPAM/virus detection and removal programs for servers and end-user computing devices.

To Improve and Integrate Web-based Student Information Systems.

Maintain, expand and support web-based Students Information Systems and Web Registration systems to help students to access private information, to enhance registration process and to satisfy administration requirements.

Plan thoroughly and deploy Disaster Recovery System in case of natural disaster, riot and vandalism.

Provide virtual storage spaces for students, faculty and staff and encourage its use as a centralized file depository which can be accessed from anywhere in the world.

Explore and evaluate emerging new IT technologies for feasibility, adoptability and interoperability.

Plan to provide facilities and support for individuals with disabilities to access various IT resources.
